A day in Sansepolcro

A day in Sansepolcro

Sansepolcro is one of Tuscany’s jewels and the perfect destination for a day out. While travelling around Tuscany I had the chance to spend a day in Sansepolcro with my family. It’s a beautiful little town full of historical interest.

Walking around the town centre every square, tower, palace and church tells a story.

Our first stop had to be the Museo Civico. It is full of treasures and works of art and, of course, the most famous is the “Resurrection” by Piero della Francesca.

We had lunch in one of the typical “trattorie”. It was quite small and cozy, and seemed like an ideal place to try some local cooking. The owner welcomed us with a smile and was happy to advise us about local dishes that were both simple and tasty.

We ordered a Tuscan starter: ham and salami from the Valtiberina with traditional bread and extra virgin olive oil.

After a couple of mouthfuls we realised that this wasn’t going to be a simple lunch break, but a whole tasting experience. We then tried the “Pappa al Pomodoro” followed by a fantastic “Fiorentina” steak that was served with roast potatoes and vegetables. After lunch we went to see Piero della Francesca’s house and then visited the Cathedral in piazza Matteotti. It has an elegant facade and is full of masterpieces like the “Volto Santo” that leave you a wonderful sense of calm. We then set off to wander around the cobbled streets and alleyways discovering workshops and coffee shops on every corner. After a last stop in one of the many bars, we took to the road again. Sansepolcro is one of Tuscany’s less known treasures, but it is well worth a visit. We did some time-travelling and found a perfect mix of history, art and beauty. Every building tells a story and every dish reminded us of traditions that come down to us through the centuries.

Come and see this historic town for yourself. You’ll love it!
